The Hair Rig along with other rigs
appear in The Science of Carp Fishing CD. |
Hair Rig
The Hair Rig was developed in
Europe and is gaining popularity in North America. With a hair rig bait is
attached to the line and the hook is completely exposed. Hair rigs can be used
with any type of bait. I use Hair rigs with canned sweet corn, maize, boilies
and dough balls.
The principle behind the Hair
rig is while sampling the bait the fish feels the point of the hook. This causes
the fish to bolt thereby setting the hook. This rig has proved so successful
that I use it ninety-nine percent of the time.
To tie a knotless hair rig
you'll need a hook, line and a swivel. In this example I’ll be using a boilie
for bait. To string the boilie onto the rig you’ll need a bating needle and a
boilie stop. You can find all of the items required for the hair
rig at Wacker Bait & Tackle, http://www.wackerbaits.com/.
See Figure 1.
Figure 1.
The first step is to select a
length of line. I use about twelve inches of monofilament or braid. You can use
any length that suits your needs. Next tie a loop onto one end of the line. This
will be the end where the boilie will be attached. Next thread the line through
the eye of the hook. See Figure 2.
Figure 2.
Next step is to start winding
the line clockwise from the eye of the hook towards the bend. Wind
counter-clockwise when winding with your left hand. I usually do about five to
seven wraps. See Figure 3.
Figure 3.
Take the end of the line and
pass the end back through the eye of the hook and pull tight. Attach a swivel to
the end of the line. See Figure 4.
Figure 4.
To add a boilie to the hair rig
you’ll be using a baiting needle. This can be any item that can pass trough the
bait and has a small hook on the end. First thread the boilie onto the baiting
needle. Next grab the loop with the hook at the end of the baiting needle. See Figure 5.
Figure 5.
Thread the boilie onto the hair
by pushing the boilie down the needle and on to the line. Push the boilie as
close to the hook as possible so that the end of the loop is exposed. See Figure 6.
Figure 6.
The final step is to add the
boilie stop. Place the boilie stop through the loop at the end of the boilie and
then pull the boilie tight against the stop. See Figure 7.
Figure 7.
That's all there is to it.
